Tyler McPherron is a Bay Area based Director of Photography who thinks that writing about yourself in third person is a pretty silly thing to do.
For me, there is nothing more interesting than real life, which is why I’m drawn to non-fiction stories that shine a light on some sort of truth. I love to work with artists, musicians, creatives and anyone who has a point of view worth sharing. I want to be there with a camera when the magic happens, all while making a little magic of my own.
I started as a DP shooting a year-long, 50 part documentary series for YouTube in which we travelled to 10 cities in the U.S. and shot 5 short documentaries in each city. It was sort of a documentary bootcamp.
Meanwhile, I got involved with Yours Truly, a collective of filmmakers and storytellers who focus on helping musicians tell their stories. Thanks to my work with YT, I’ve been lucky to shoot and collaborate with some of my favorite musicians, including Future Islands, FKA Twigs, Moses Sumney, Sylvan Esso and Toro y Moi.
As it turns out, brands and advertising creatives are also interested in the kind of work I do. I’ve been lucky to translate my non-fiction filmmaking experience to the commercial world, where I have been refining my repertoire of skills, professional knowledge and my network of collaborators.
Today, I get to work with my best friends making the most creative, engaging and visually stunning work of my career. I’ve been honored to work with clients including Google, Pixar, Target, Facebook, Microsoft, Kraft, Intel, Levis, Method, Uber, Nest, Casper, One Medical PBS, ESPN, Fox Sports, Complex, Nowness, Pandora and YouTube.
You should also know that even though I have a propensity to dress like a dad and make dad jokes, I am not a real dad, just a dog dad.
